Abstract

The purpose of this research was to improve students’ speaking ability by using a communicative language teaching method for the first grade of SMA YP PGRI 1 Makassar. The research design was pre-experimental. The respondents were 30 students of the first grade at SMA YP PGRI 1 Makassar. The research instruments were story text and a smartphone for recording. The result showed significant differences in student ratios between the pre-test and post-test, where the post-test ratio was greater than the pre-test (2. 371> 1.483) and the T-Test ratio was higher than the T-Table ratio (34.696>2.045). Based on the result of the data analysis, it can be concluded that the use of the communicative language teaching method was beneficial in improving students’ speaking skills.
