Improving Students' Speaking Ability Using Authentic Materials at the First Grade of SMA YP PGRI 1 Makassar

This research discusses teaching speaking by using the authentic materials strategy for first-grade students at SMA YP PGRI 1 Makassar. The purpose of this study is to determine the use of authentic materials in improving students' speaking ability in the first grade of SMA YP PGRI 1 Makassar. This study employs an experimental design method. The sample in this study consists of 30 students selected using cluster random sampling technique. In collecting data, this study uses a speaking test, namely pre-test and post-test. The results of this study indicate that the use of authentic materials effectively improves students' speaking ability. This is evidenced by the higher average post-test score compared to the average pre-test score (13.67 > 11.00). Additionally, the t-test value is higher than the t-table value (22.100 > 2.045) at a significance level of 0.05 with a degree of freedom of 29. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the use of authentic materials can improve the speaking ability of first-grade students at SMA YP PGRI 1 Makassar.
