THE EFFEFCTIVENESS OF WORD ANALOGIES TECHNIQUE IN IMPROVING THE ENGLISH VOCABULARY MASTERY

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether or not the students were able to improve their vocabulary knowledge by word analogies. This research used a pre- experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the second year students of SMP Negeri 32 Bulukumba. The samples were 20 students, which taken by purposive sampling. The data was analyzed into percentage, mean score analysis and value of the t-test. The result of the data analysis showed that the students’ vocabulary achievement, in the pre-test was X 1 = 147,7 and post-test X 2 = 186,3. The result of the t-test value (9,65) was greater than the t-table value (1,725) which indicated that the null hypothesis(H 0 ) was rejected and the alternative
hypothesis(H 1 ) was accepted. There was significant difference of the
students’ vocabulary knowledge before and after presenting word analogies
material through word analogies Strategy. Based on the findings and discussions in the research, the writer
concludes that teaching by using Word analogies at the second year students
of SMP NEGERI 32 BULUKUMBA can improve their vocabulary mastery.
